Poesia® rail groove profiles provide protection

Rail groove profiles are usually used in railway company workshops or company railyards. They close off tripping and clamping points on rails. poesia holding ag’s elastic groove profiles give way in the rim area and close the grooves again after the train passes through.

Rail grooves on tracks have always been potential pitfalls for pedestrians and cyclists. Even in railway workshops and factories, they lead to accidents again and again. Trampled feet are the result. But it doesn’t have to happen. With the use of poesia®’s rail groove profiles, such mishaps can be prevented. This also makes it easier for material shuttles with small wheels to cross the tracks.

Custom manufacturing for almost any crossing
About two years ago, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB AG) installed rail groove profile in their H (Herdern Zurich) and G (Geroldstrasse Zurich) service facilities. Thomas Grell, Production Planning/Production Engineering, is very satisfied with the solution: ‘At several crossings, a total of 200 metres of rail groove profiles were installed. Since no off-the-peg products were available for our application, the poesia holding ag specialist on site noted the measurements of each crossing in order to make an appropriate offer. A custom profile had to be made for almost every crossing.’ In order to protect the profiles from the flange of the wheels, poesia® developed a special approach wedge, which, according to Thomas Grell, has stood the test well: ‘We are very satisfied with the products. Their service life has noticeably increased. And the number of accidents has fallen, as we hoped. It also became easier to clean and lubricate vehicles to cross the rails. We also consider the value for money to be an advantage.’

Safety measures are worthwhile
zb Zentralbahn AG has also decided once again to rely on poesia®’s products due to its positive experiences with previous projects. Over a length of 80 metres, rail tracks in the maintenance building in Meiringen had to be secured with track and rail groove profiles. For Manfred Schläpfer, Head of Maintenance at zb Zentralbahn AG, the investment has paid off: ‘Of course, the products do have their price, because they are not off the peg. But in terms of safety, this preventive measure was very important to us. Even if we we only prevent a single accident, that means the effort has paid off.’

Other applications
The rail groove profiles also increase safety and comfort outside the workshops. They are being installed in many places; at level crossings or factory roads, for example, where rolling stock travels at speeds of up to 20 km/h.
