Vocational training in technical professions

The buzzword in many companies where manual or technical skills are required is "skills shortage". One of the ways to counteract this problem is to train apprentices. The poesia group is currently training two young people in technical professions and three in the commercial sector.

Dominik Hofer became aware of the training opportunities at poesia during his school lessons. Thanks to what he learnt at school, he also learned how to apply for a job. A short time later, he applied for a taster apprenticeship and was invited to take part. During the taster session, he had to complete two tests, among other things, after which he received positive feedback. As he really liked the company, the team, the work and the taster day as such, he applied for an apprenticeship as an EFZ polymechanic.
To broaden his horizons, Dominik Hofer also had a taster in a joinery and a carpentry workshop. However, his enthusiasm for working on the machines and the good feeling he had during the taster programme tipped the scales in favour of poesia. Since starting his apprenticeship in summer 2023, Dominik has already been able to work independently in some areas. His tasks include, for example, breaking edges on workpieces that he processes. He also produces adhesive rolls that are used in the company. He also creates chamfers and angles and carries out simple drilling and milling work.

Mariam Habach is in her second year of training as an EBA plastics technician. She finds the work on the machines exciting. She is also interested in the chemical processes. When it comes to the connection between school and work at the training company, she finds it a shame that the timing of theory and practice often doesn't harmonise: "We often learn material at school that we can't yet apply in practice. That's a great pity." In the company, she mainly works on the extrusion lines and sometimes in injection moulding production. This involves producing jet formers for shower heads. She also learnt the bonding process for windows and doors.
Everyday life at the vocational school consists of challenging subject matter that Mariam has to cram. The topics often flow from one school subject to another. She finds the transitions from one subject to the next a challenge. Better structures would be very helpful in terms of learning the exam material. As she really enjoys the apprenticeship, she can well imagine completing additional training as an EFZ plastics technologist after completing her apprenticeship.

Quote from Dominik Hofer: "It's better to fail than not to have tried something."

Quote from Mariam Habach: "There's always something new to learn in life."

The poesia group employs around 70 people, including five apprentices. It operates at its main site in Unterkulm and at external sites in Hochdorf and Urdorf. It produces seals made of TPE and silicone for applications in the construction, technology, transport and food industries.
